I had a nasty breakup with my ex and we haven't spoken in 3 years but recently we started chatting online. We were good friends and now we are both dating other people so I have hope that we can be friends from now on and slowly start seeing each other socially again.

i tried to be friends with the ex. everything ended very amicably. but i think it was weirder for him than it was for me, so in the end, we could never hang out just as friends.

Guess so, but it varies on what the situation that they went through that caused the break up, if it's a pretty bad situation, I don't think that they could be friends, but if it's a mild one, as long as they are both mature than they should be able to be friends. o.o
