I think it's a bit difficult because being best friends, you tend to tell each other intimate stuff. So, progressively, you tend to see the other one as an increasingly important part of your life...
In my case, one of my best friends is a guy. But there is no place for romance between us since
a) he's married and has a daughter
b) he's cool but he's not completely my type.

I think (judging from my point of view with my experiences), if a guy and a girl were best friends, one will fall for the other.... they may date, they may not. If they date, I dont think they'll still be as close as they were before, but once they get past the crushes, it should be okay...

maybe guys and girls can be 'best friends' without any romantic feelings arising if they see each other in a brother/sister way. i hav a friend who i'm pretty close to. i don't know how or why i never fell for him, but i know he never fell for me cos he always had someone else. i won't say we're like siblings either though. because, well, i think if he ever had a chance to sleep with me he would, not because of emotional feelings, but just because he's a guy ;p

Yes! Most definitely! Why not!?!? MY best friend is a guy LOL (if you couldnt tell already =P) I absolutely HATE the stereotype that guys and girls cannot be best friends. I have to say that I did date my friend in high school for like about 2 weeks and then we become the best of friends ^^. Once you kinda found out the other person's habits and what not, I think it just makes you kinda NOT fall for them you know? LOL.

Half the fun of dating is getting to know the person and have emotional ties with them. I mean I love my bestfriend but it's like how I love my family. =] I have to say it's really hard though because meeting the girls that he dates, they always try and cozy up to me, because I am the "best friend" but it's so fake it's scandalous.

It's also hard being the girl best friend because if you were the girlfriend and if your guy had chick best friend that you always confide to, after awhile you feel left out and vice versa too. It would be hard to be friends but it's not impossible to have one =D

i have a guy friend and we both consider each other best and closest friends and there aren't any romantic feelings between us and we didn't grow up together so yes it is possible for a guy and girl to just be best friends
