Hello There, Guest! (Login — Register)
It looks like most of you are students here... and I am a high school science teacher. So tell me, how much time do you spend on these forums and other internet communities each day? Do you think having access to this takes away from your homework or sleep time? How many of you think if you no longer had access to the internet, you will probably do better in school or at least be better rested to pay attention in class?
The reason why I ask is I have MANY students who are dozing in class, but never has homework or is prepared for tests. I'm wondering if young people nowadays have way too much access to computer and TV. When I was growing up, there was no TV after hours (only TV was in the living room) and computers were just a figment of Bill Gate's imagination.
Well I don't spend that much times on forums, just on my spare time. I guess having access to the internet/TV has taken some time away from homework/sleep.
To be honest, if I didn't have the internet, I wouldn't be on MSN most of the time chatting to people and I would probably be able to pay attention in school better. I guess kids these days (including me), have a lot of privledges that many people didn't have back then.
i don't stay much in forum...i usually play online games instead and ya it take time away from my homework...well it doesn't change how i pay attention in class or not...maybe ill spend more time on homework ...depends cause even if i don't have hw and if i'm lazy that day i just sleep the whole day after schooluntil the morning

For me, the average in which I spend on the computer is about 2-4 hours. I have to admit that most of the time is spent on watching media on Youtube or chatting with my friends. I believe that having access does take away from homework and sleep time, but only if one allows it to. A bunch of my friends, including myself, do have access to the computer, but we use it for academic purposes as well as doing other things. So when the time comes for class or studying, we put computer time last on our list or not at all. I think we've learned to wisely balance our time, so whether or not the computer exists makes no real difference. The issue varies amongst people, but I also see that the number of students neglecting school work because of computers is also growing. For that, I have to say that I do feel disappointed.
Bottom line is, time is key. I suppose that the privilege in accessing computers can only be abused if students don't know how to manage their time correctly. Spending an hour or two isn't so bad if the students are doing their homework and studying too. It's even better if the students are spending that computer time doing research or anything academically related. Today, I think that students do have too much access to the computer. I think parents should start monitoring how much time their children spend on the computer. If not, these students need to start learning how to manage time.
My average computer time is 8 hours! Pretty long, huh! Well, I use computers at work and my laptop is practically sleeping with me! lol Oh yes! as in literally sleeping with me. It's permanent address is my bed! lol So, 8 hours could even lead to more hours with plus, plus and plus hours!!! lol
I mostly access the internet/computer at home for researchwork, downloading, watching movies/tv series, and accessing this site. And mind you, this forum is the only one I'm active at. If you consider occassional posting and a lot of lurking active, that is! Computers and the net help a lot with ones research especially if you know reliable sites to gather info from. It lessens errors for your paperwork and makes your presentation really good! Well, it's mainly due to ones talent, skills and intelligence. You can't make computers work for you if the computer is not for you! If you know what I mean.
Accessibility to info makes ones (student) life easier but I must admit it really deprives me of sleep, especially if the show on tv is a must-see or if I'm having a movie or a drama marathon. But I usually do such things if I already finished with my tasks. If I'm carried away and found myself wasting time on the net/tv then I have to make extra effort and make time for the task neglected. It just a matter of good time management or for students good study habits. Because ones you established such traits then you can enjoy more the leisure time. But sometimes I found myself dozing off with my laptop on wasting precious electrical energy resulting to high bills! Poor mom and dad!
I guess I'm just lucky because during my school/university life and upto now, I can study/work even if the tv is on or the radio is blasting off. It's when I have to read the subs while watching my favorite asian drama of the moment that I really have to find the time without interruptions or worries of a pending task.
Dozing off at class is human nature! lol Even during my school days when the only access to multimedia is the small tv at the living room, a lot of the students then were dozing off or yawning or not paying attention to the teacher. It's not only prevalent at this time. There are a lot of reasons for that and it's not entirely due to technology, to name a few: one, growing hormones. Growing up has a lot of peculiarities that can not be explained. You just want to doze off even if you already slept the full 8 hours and even more. You just want to sleep and sleep because your body said so and especially if the teacher is boring. There goes number two. When a teacher don't know how to teach the subject, mumbling on and on in a monotone monologue, or could not motivate the students or speaking on the board with his/her back at the class then what student would want to listen?! I wouldn't as well! For my case, I usually draw or exchange little notes with my seatmate! Well, it's still inattention, right? Bad me!!!
Then there's number three which is a boring subject. If the subject is uninteresting even if the teacher is motivated to teach, the attention span will be short, leading to zzzzzzzzzzz...zzzleep! And yes, there's number four which is the technology craze. Whether it's the tv shows on one's favorite channel or movie marathons or chatting and surfing the net or computer games and xbox or whatever techie thingy was the trend of the moment, ones you got addicted to it you can never stop unless you are forced to!
Lucky me, I still haven't reach that stage and not planning to! lol I guess it all ends up to the way you balance your time and making priorities and... if you love your parents. I mean, if you love them you won't do something that will make their head ache like the news of you in detention for the nth time!!!... and if you love yourself! a good night sleep is still good regardless of age! It lessens wrinkles, it slows ageing! it gives you a few hours off one's problems! lol
What am I bubbling about?!?!?! computer off... back to sleep... 4jpz!!! lol

Lmao, that's what I love about you 4jpz! You ramble on and on without really digressing from the topic, well...sorta. xD
My average computer time is 2 hours per day. I don't spend too much time on forums....I'm in college now, and I didn't pay full attention in all classes though cause some of the lecturers are really boring...they can't really teach well...however I've never slept in class till now.
I couldn't agree more!! Yes, speding time on the internet and tv does really take away your time from school, not just school but also your social life with family and friends.
For me I don't spend much time on the internet, but I think watching the dramas really takes away most of my time.

haha, same. never really started falling asleep in class til university started. its crazy tho, i go to all my lectures and sit in the front row and i still find myself sleepin thru class.
i usually don't spend much time on forums, but its summer right now and my dad keeps draggin me to his office where i sit around and do nothing. he doesn't let me bring headphones either, so its not like i can watch stuff at work or play games. so i find this forum is a pretty decent way to kill time. anyway, back to the sleepin in class thing, i spend a lotta time on the comp, but a lotta that time is cuz of work/homework. otherwise, i'm watchin stuff or findin stuff to download; i rarely play games anymore.
