Why is it that some dramas are stereotyped to be a certain genre?

I mean, they can be good in that certain genre, but they don't have to be always known for that. They can have other genres that are good. Such as Japanese movies, they are known for their horror movies, but i mean, its not all that is good from them. Although they make them better than some others, they can be known for other genres. Korean movies are known for sad storylines. Someone even once told me that if someone doesn't die in a korean movie/drama, then its not good. I dont think its true.
