i would definately say the book is better, especially fine crafts, such as the hunt for red october, and the likes.

it depends i guess. i love the lord of the rings movie trilogy more than the bks. However, in some cases bks tell the story better. eg harry potter

if tolkien's lord of the rings book can produce the same great soundtrack,or can make the reader imagine how gulum looked like, or can provide the reader with an extremely wild imagination to make all these things up then it's better than the movie.

it all depends on how much changes they have to make for the movie to stand out to grab you in the first place to go and see it. It could be that some find it easier to watch it than to read the book.

RE: are books really better than the movies?
Definitely. Books give you the power to use your imagination in all forms.

Watching a movie, you may not agree to things. You may say " That's not how the character should look!" Whereas in the book, its allll you. You can decide it all.

Movies never contain enough detail either, which sucks!
