RE: are books really better than the movies?
no way! for harry potter, the books are definitely better!
first of all, Dumbledore (the one from third movie on) is totally balistic (as seen in the 4th movie) and completely does not fit the description in the book. he's my fav character and his image was so bad on screen.
second, they always leave stuff out in the movie and still make it 3+ hours long. just make two parts for one book if you have to!
sisterhood of the travelling pants - book better
bridge to terabithia - movie is completely different than book, so dunno how to compare them
eragon - I heard the movie was so much worse than the book
lord of the rings - haven't seen or read. sry. plan on doing so soon, I hope
ella enchanted - movie was okay, but the book was great! book held more deep meaning and good, solid themes
In my lifetime, in the case of books-turned-movies, the books are usually better. I'm not saying that all movies are worse than books, but if there's a lot of inaccuracy, it tends to bug me and that happens a lot.

RE: are books really better than the movies?
I feel judging a movie based on the original book is like having two sprinters race, first one holds world's record while the second has a toe stabbed by wood chip.
A novel is usually written by a single author. Basically, the author is like a god in the story. "Let there be light..." and there's light. "Have Robin Hood shoot the second arrow, piercing the first at the bull's eye..." and there it sounds so easy. Many problems arise with movies. The crew has so many things to worry about. Practicalities, about the carryout of actors/actresses, about what director wants to portray, music accompaniment, how background/special effects/graphics/cameraman/editing/etc... all tie in and have to go in sync to bring a realistic comparison to the book. The book starts out with a brand new adventure to go along with the reader's imagination. Yet the movie starts out with anticipated plots for the audience to relate to the book, with critiques to come.
All I'm saying is that good novel might be difficult to write. But a movie takes alot more effort to make. This gives the book a lot of advantage to be the better.
I guess I'm a bit bitter about this. lolol. I often hear my brother, a regular movie-goer, complain about movies to books alot, so...
One thing I'm certain of, is that the movie has the potential to be better than the book. Because visual effect impacts much more. However, it's just too hard.
