Nobody is stupid, mate - and there is no such thing as a stupid question.
I can't give you a tutorial, since I don't know what software you use. What you can do is type this in the Google search box - adding subs to movie - and you will get a lot of choices.
Another alternative is a website called Afterdawn.com, which generally has useful information and links.
If it is difficult to follow what you see on line, you can copy and paste it as a word document, and then even print it out.
If you do all that, and are still stuck - let me know - but you have to give me more info.

to help you and make it easy you should use a program like VLC media player, or MpcStar I just downloaded a serie from here and it worked perfrectly fine for me I did not even have to configurate the subs to work with the video file, it was automatic and worked at the first time. no work need to be done. btw if you have problem using codec to make work your video use VLC media player, because that one dont need any codec to work

well, with windows media and vosub it's more easy. You only have to rename the srt/ass and the avi with the same name. ^^
