RE: ANTIVIRUS?
AVG doesn't have very good heuristics. If you want a good anti-virus, expect to pay for the subscription.

McAfee? Norton? Both of them are very memory-heavy, and will slow your computer down. They're not bad: they're better than ZoneAlarm. I recommend Norton. The two companies are renowned for hogging memory (RAM: speed of computer) and having pesky notifications, and being impossible to uninstall properly.

For firewalls, WIndows XP has its own "Windows Firewall", but if you want to go beyond that, PC Tools (creator of Spyware Doctor) Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/ . It should, however, be already included in a paid security/anti-virus software like Norton.

RE: ANTIVIRUS?
My vote is for Avast. It's free, doesn't take up too many resources, scans for viruses & spyware, and actually works. What more can you ask for.

I agree, I also use it and it's very effective and free as well. I was using AVG before but I had some issues with it that's why I switched to Antivir
