we have talented actors and actresses...all they need is a good original script...
making remakes is a gamble because it can't be helped but to be compared with the original ---specially if the original made a big hit.
yep you're right! the thing about remakes is the unoriginality and the comparison... but then again, Filipinos also produce original and quality series. In a 1-2 remakes shown during primetime in one tv network, there will be 2-3 original series, so that just shows Filipinos are not a total slave of remakes. Besides, it's not just Filipinos who make remakes. Americans have Ugly Betty, a remake of Colombia's Betty La Fea. Koreans have their Boys Before Flowers which is a remake of Hana Yori Dango. I believe some other countries also have remakes but it's just not known to us.
Further, the remakes Filipinos do incorporates Filipino feel and is a showcase of Filipino values and culture as well...
I think the purposes of tv networks in producing remakes are:
1) its acceptance. I mean, the original already proves it can have high ratings then it's safe to assume that the remake will also experience the same.
2) its global appeal. If an original series is promoted, other cultures might or might not check it out. Whereas if it's a remake, the cultures who have loved the original will one way or another check the remake out just to see if it lives up to the original or not. They might hate it, they might not... In a way, this will also be an international promotion to the cast and crew.
... I thought of more purposes prior to writing these ramblings, but they skip my mind now! lol
Well, SBS appreciates how My Girl was done, I didn't but that's just me... lol... but now I'm looking forward to Only You and Lovers in Paris. Hoping that these two remakes will live up to the beauty of the original and that SBS and the K-drama addicts will also appreciate them.
