Synopsis by 4jpz
200 Pounds Beauty stars Kim Ah Joong as Kang Hanna/Jenny, who happens to be a ghost vocalist for a famous Korean pop idol named Ammy and sometimes traipsed as a phone sex partner. She is obese but gifted with a beautiful voice and a lovable and lighthearted personality.  She has a secret love towards Ammy's manager Sang Jun, played by Joo Jin Mo, but was forced to quit her job as a singer and pursue a full-body plastic surgery after Ammy publicly humiliated her during Sang Jun's birthday party.

This Korean movie, depicting a lighter look at society’s obsession to physical beauty vis-à-vis natural beauty or plastic surgery, is directed by Kim Yong Hwa and is based on a Japanese series by Suzuki Yumiko.  According to YesAsia, 200 Pounds Beauty has become one of the Korea’s top ten grossing films of all time and the highest grossing romantic comedy ever.

Review by 4jpz
Is beauty more than skin deep? That is the premise in the 2006 movie 200 Pounds Beauty.  With today’s fickle society wherein in order for one to be socially acceptable one needs to be slim and pretty and in order to achieve such a fate one needs to resort to skipping meals and dieting, exercising and staying slim but not necessarily fit, and if these “natural” ways will not achieve the shape or look one wants there’s always the fast track extreme makeover of beauty enhancement, the plastic surgery.

This is the scenario that leads to Kang Hanna’s extreme makeover.  She might be blessed with a lighthearted personality and a beautiful voice but she suffers from low self-esteem and self-consciousness due to society’s ungenerous outlook to those not conforming to the society’s norms or media trends, like obesity.  She quits her job and after a few months of suffering under the knife achieved a body and a face to knockout everybody who turns to look.  With her new drop-dead gorgeous look and slim physique she develops a new personality, a reborn for the old Hanna who comes out of her caterpillar self and be the butterfly named Jenny. She then wins over Sang Jun with her beautiful voice and her pretty self.

But like many butterflies Jenny’s life is short lived for then she realized how ironic life is for even if society accepts plastic surgery, society is not generous to those who underwent artificial enhancement.  She realized that society, especially Sang Jun, looks up to the value of natural beauty in spite the acceptance to artificial beauty.  She realized that what she gained with her new life is a total contradiction to what she truly wants and what is deep in her heart.

The storyline is predictable for you automatically surmise that there is a fairy tale ending for the butterfly, Kang Hanna, but it is an enjoyable two-hour for the movie is incredibly funny and lighthearted, romantic yet dramatic as well. I cracked out loud and even rolled laughing to some of the scenarios and dialogues.  Tears even flowed in sympathy to Jenny/Kang Hanna’s plight.

Kang Hanna’s dad’s adage “God is the only one who can do everything.  We humans do what we’re capable of” is very apt for the choices human’s make, and is very appropriate for the movie’s storyline.  I also particularly like the movie’s soundtrack wherein popular western music was rendered in the Korean language with a new twist.  Original Korean music is also sung with heart-rending lyrics…
"The wind knocks on the window
Over the room as small as me
Twinkling stars so beautiful filling the room with love
Don’t be hurt caressing my wound so gently
Embracing me to sleep
Too hurt for my legs to walk
Eyes so blurry with tears
Before love never meant for me
I will keep on smiling
Dear moments with you buried deep in my heart
Like those stars embroidered in my eyes
I will love you forever

Crawling to me like a dream
My little star up high dazzling my eyes
Shining brightly falling on my shoulders
Don’t be sad anymore
Holding my hands tightly caressing my wound
It embraces me warmly
Too hurt for my legs to walk
Eyes so blurry with tears
Before love never meant for me
I will keep on smiling
Dear moments with you buried deep in my heart
Like those stars embroidered in my eyes
I will love you forever"

I recommend this to all who wants a good time and a good laugh, a romance, comedy and drama rolled into one, and to people who wants awareness to plastic surgery without the seriousness and tackiness.

You're welcome, edison, anytime! Wink

It's a topic overused by the movie industry in every parts of the world, even Hollywood, so it's no wonder that you found similarities to previous movies you've watched. But this movie is different and it rocks!!! And the lead star Kim Ah-Joong who played Kang Hanna/Jenny is a newcomer in the entertainment industry! Just like what Imfx mentioned on his review, I also wonder if she's the one who sang in the movie coz it's good!!! She's good! Toungue

added note: She did sang the songs according to an article in Korean Times. The movie unleashed her talents including singing. Great gal!

Imfx has reviewed this movie, and it's a wonderful review! So if you want to learn more about the movie click on the link I provided on top.

I also love the soundtrack Dance especially the title song which is a cover of the Blondie song "Maria." Loveholic, a Korean modern rock band, has a song on the OST as well.

Ghostshell has provided d/l links for 4 songs but still looking for the complete OST!

RE: 200 Pounds Beauty
an update:
I've added the complete OST of 200PB on the d/l movie thread. The link for the d/l is provided on top.

Hoshi, the movie you're talking about is Shallow Hall starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

Here's an article I've read from the 200PB thread at soompi. The article talked about the actress Kim Ah Jung and her experiences in doing the movie.  It also mentioned it's similarity with Shallow Hall.

CALL it a fat shot at fame that worked.
Until the movie 200 Pounds Beauty, Korean actress Kim Ah Jung had always been known as an acting lightweight, famous only for good looks and 'knockout figure'.

But now, she has found big-time fame by donning a fat suit to play an obese backstage singer who undergoes full-body plastic surgery to become slim. Ah Jung, 25, was the only one who dared take up the challenge of the 90kg role which was reportedly rejected by other actresses.

Her jaw-dropping transformation - not unlike Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow in the film Shallow Hal - has won rave reviews in Korea and catapulted the movie to the No 1 spot on the local box-office chart. Within a month, 200 Pounds Beauty has attracted more than 4.5 million admissions.

Ah Jung herself has also become the talk of the town, inspiring Sports Chosun to coin the term 'Kim Ah Jung Syndrome' to refer to her raging popularity. Korean newspaper Donga Ilbo's resident film critic also praised her 'artful comic acting' and how her tears 'embellish' a key concert performance scene.

The movie's theme song Maria, also performed by Ah Jung, has soared to No 1 on a local music chart. It has also been downloaded 170,000 times from Cyworld, where the single is posted. In addition, Ah Jung has also snagged no less than five product endorsements, including a coveted lingerie commercial.

Ah Jung, who made her acting debut on TV in 2004, was once deemed too snobbish and unapproachable. She has admitted she does not warm to strangers easily, and that she is too 'timid' to initiate conversation. But not anymore, it seems.

DIFFICULT TO ACCEPT
Earlier when she was busy touring Korea to promote 200 Pounds Beauty, Ah Jung was only too eager to share her filming experiences. Like how it took four hours for a special Hollywood makeup team to 'inflate' her to 90kg, and how it was unbearably hot to wear the fat suit made of latex and cotton. 'To smile as I usually do, I had to double my energy because of the thick makeup on my face,' she told The Korea Times.

But the svelte 48kg star, who stands at 1.69m, was also frank to admit that she found it hard to accept her ballooned image. 'When I first looked at myself after the special effects makeup, I was really shocked and cried when nobody was looking... until the seventh shooting, I couldn't focus on acting,' she told The Korea Herald.

However, she said it was easy to immerse in her fat character. She even drew strength from nasty comments from passers-by who whispered they 'felt sick' to see her filming in the streets.

Exactly how does she look? Singapore fans do not have to wait long to find out. Innoform Media has acquired the distribution rights for 200 Pounds Beauty and its general manager Lim Teck said it will hit our screens late next month or in March. 'We like the concept of the movie and we think it'd work here,' said Mr Lim. 'The fat/slim theme will definitely attract attention here and Kim Ah Jung really went all out for her comedic role.'
