Girls' Generation, also known as So Nyuh Shi Dae (SNSD), is a nine-member girl group in South Korea under SM Entertainment. Their members are Tae Yeon, Jessica, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyo Yeon, Yu Ri, Soo Young, Yoon A, and Seo Hyun.
Identifying Girl's Generation Members
Formed in 2007, Girls' Generation drew attention as the "Female Version" of Super Junior, a popular boy group which consisted of 13 members at the time and who were also from the same entertainment company. Many who criticized the group felt that they were riding on the success of their Sunbaes (more experienced seniors), Super Junior, because they were also a group with many members instead of the usual handful of singers. Therefore many felt that these girls were a gimmick of some sort to make some extra money. On top of it all, that year was the year that many new girl groups were rising to fame, namely the Wonder Girls and Kara, who had debuted before them. Girls' Generation had to overcome being slightly newer and win over new fans not already taken by the aforementioned girl groups.
But with their cute charms and girly image, they won over the hearts of many people, even from across the seas. With their debut single "Into the New World" on August 5, 2007, they received moderate success and achieved #1 on M.net M.Countdown!. Then shortly after, in November, they released their first full self-titled album with the title track, "Girls' Generation". Early in 2008, Girls' Generation started promoting "Kissing You", the second song from their album, and achieved great success as well and by March, a re-packaged version of their album was released with the third single "Baby Baby".
Promotions for Girls' Generation were on hiatus for the next 9 months and several members took on several other roles, such as hosting TV and radio shows or acting in skits. Members Jessica, Tiffany, and Seo Hyun even went on to join a mini-album collaboration, entitled "Roommate: Emotional Band-aid", in which they performed the song "Oppa Nappa (Bad Oppa)". But preparations for their great comeback were already underway as it was announced in December of 2008 and it would boost their popularity to its peak!
The first mini-album, along with the title track, "Gee", was released in January of 2009 and was an instant success. Topping several music charts within a couple of days. The single stayed #1 on KBS' Music Bank for 9 weeks and holds the record for being #1 on that show for the longest consecutive weeks, previously held by the Wonder Girls' single, "Nobody".
"Gee Music Video"
Shortly after the success of "Gee", another mini-album was planned for release for June 2009. "Genie (Tell Me Your Wish)" was released and the single from the mini-album was also another hit, making #1 in several charts.
"Genie (Tell me your Wish) Music Video"
After promotions for "Genie" were halted, Girls' Generation went on another break but continued with many other side projects, such as releasing a single and music video for the promotion of the LG Cyon phone Chocolate, entitled "Chocolate Love" and starring in their own reality TV show, "Hello Baby!", in which they took turns baby-sitting someone's baby. In November, it was announced that they were going to have their first solo concert tour in Asia, and within 3 minutes, both dates for the Korean concerts in December were sold out!
On January 28, 2010, the second full album, "Oh!" was released and received moderate success over music charts, achieving #1 on KBS' Music Bank five times and several other awards.
"Oh! Music Video"
At the end of the "Oh!" music video, a teaser for their next concept was shown. It showed a darker version of Girls' Generation and was nicknamed "Black Soshi". On March 17, the music video was released entitled "Run Devil Run" and the single was a part of a re-package of their second album. The single proved to be another hit, winning even more awards on several music shows. Both the first album and the re-package would outsell any other artist during the first half of 2010 and their videos would attract over 13 million views on GOMTV.
"Run Devil Run Music Video"
In August 2010, Girls' Generation started promotions in Japan and have planned to re-release "Genie" in Japanese.
