Namie Amuro Biography
Namie Amuro is a Japanese pop singer. She debuted in 1992 with the music group,
Super Monkeys. When Amuro was younger, she was once been referred to as the "Teen Queen of Japan." Throughout the years, she has been consistently one of the top acts in Japan, and has released several albums that have sold over a million copies. She is also known for being a fashionista and started several trends amongst young women in Japan. Many even consider her the one who popularized the "ganguro" style due to her tanned skin.
As a child, Amuro was raised by her mother after her parents divorced. Her initial ambitions did not include the entertainment industry, instead she had originally wanted to be a flight attendant. However, Masayuki Makino, the owner of the Okinawa Actors School, discovered her at the age of 12. She attended the school for two years and then was placed into a music group called
Super Monkeys. Although the group was never popular, Amuro started gaining individual popularity, eventually causing the band to be renamed
Namie Amuro and the Super Monkeys. Eventually Amuro decided to become a solo singer and switched to a different label, Avex.
Under Avex, Amuro developed a working relationship with Tetsuya Komuro. She released singles entitled "Body Feels Exit" and "Chase the Chance," the latter selling over one million copies and netting Amuro a Golden Arrow award in 1995.
Amuro went on to become one of Japan's most revered singers, selling several million-copy albums and singles. She continued to be influential in the Japanese fashion industry.
