Jolin is a well-known Taiwanese pop-singer. Her career started after winning in an MTV singing competition, singing the song
The Greatest Love of all. Afterwards, she got signed by Universal Music. When July 1999 came around, Jolin had officially landed on the pop entertainment world, releasing a single entitled "Living With the World." At the time she was still a small-name, but luckily her single became very popular. Seeing that her popularity was rising, her label prompted her to release an album. She released her album just two months later in September of 1999 and entitled it
Jolin 1019. Her image was of the innocent "girl-next-door" as many people labeled her a "teenage boy killer," comparable to the Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera of the Taiwanese. Jolin 1019 was a decent hit, selling around 400,000 copies in Asia (by comparison, Utada Hikaru's premiere album,
First Love, sold 5 million copies in the first month alone). Jolin's 2nd album in May of 2000, saw similar numbers, but the tracks to this album became much more popular throughout Asia.
Around the time of her 2nd album, her 1st photobook was also released. It contained a multitude of photographs and was mainly taken in Hawaii.
For her third album, Show Your Love, she changed her look from being teen-oriented to a more mature and adult look. It wasn't effective, however, as the album sales for this album were very lacking in comparison to her previous two albums. She soon released a fourth album, Lucky Number, but this album was a bust as well.
The next year was very lackluster, as her only noteworthy activities was the release of another photo album taken in Thailand included with a single composed by Jay Chou. It was the next year that her career boomed. She signed with Sony Music and released an album entitled
Magic. The album topped the charts in Taiwan for three months, and sold 300,000 copies in Taiwan. This was her much needed return to the top of the Taiwanese music industry after being a relative no-show for a year.
Jolin's sixth album, Castle, topped the charts in many Asian countries. The album featured some hit songs composed by one of the most talented Chinese songwriters, Jay Chou, including 倒帶. On April 25, 2005, she released her seventh album, J-Game, which also topped charts throughout Asia. Lee-Hom Wang composed one of the songs, Exclusive Myth, on her album. By this time, Jolin became a superstar in Asian countries such as Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore.
In 2006, Jolin left her Sony BMG Record label and joined EMI Capitol. She recently won the MTV Asia Style Award 2006 at Bangkok, Thailand. Jolin has worked really hard to improve her dancing skill which has reflected in her music video "Dancing Diva". "Diva" is also the name of her new album and it will be her first album under Capitol label which was released on May 12th, 2006. Dancing Diva to date has sold over 2 million copies within Asia, making it her most successful album.
