The event was held four days prior to May 20, which apparently is the National Day of Breastfeeding, and involved not only the mothers and their mammary munching babies but art exhibitions as well.

This seemingly mundane act has been the point of contention recently in China where social norms and dependence on powdered milk has sparked a debate on which method is better for a child’s development, breastfeeding vs. formula.

So much so that as recent as 2013 pro breastfeeding advocates held rallies with signs stating slogans such as:

“Milk powder is finite, a mother’s love is infinite”

“You don’t need foreign milk powder, you just need breast milk.”
