In the entertainment industry, beauty is absolute. It is everything most everyone desires and the demand for talented sexy women is higher then ever. Plastic surgery is on the rise and those without it or even very little of it are ridiculed. However beauty dose not determine talent (Paris Hilton), it is after all only skin deep. I’d like to list my opinion of the top 5 female Asian stars that defy the unfortunate standards on beauty and continue to successfully showcase their skills despite the constant harsh criticism for their not so perfect exterior. Please note that this is NOT an ugly list. This is a list about celebrities that transcend beyond beauty with raw talent.
Sandra Oh
Currently known best for her outstanding role as Dr. Cristina Yang on the Emmy and Golden Globe award winning series Grey’s Anatomy, Sandra Oh is not your typical idea of an Asian beauty. And why you ask? Well most accounted to the lack of double eyelid surgery. For those of you unaware of this procedure, the double eyelid surgery is a procedure done to the eyelid to make them appear wider. It’s fairly simple to spot those that have had it done and Sandra is defiantly one who has not. Whether or not you find her beautiful Hollywood finds her useful as an award winning actress that has graced the screen for over 20 years she proves to be a force to be reckoned with.
Margaret Cho
Love her or hate her Margaret Cho is the current reigning queen of comedy! Cho uses her looks in her comedy routine often sighting her constant rejections from films and series. She has even expressed deep depression and heavy body image issues but she has since conquered her insecurities and persevered through Hollywood’s standards. She not a beauty icon but she’s funny and talented without a doubt! This is why she has been acting and performing successful sold out stand up comedy shows for over 15 years.
Bada
Bada has an unfortunate place in South Korea. She’s constantly hassled by netziens for her looks. She isn’t considered pretty enough and when she tries she’s called trashy. I never understood why people see Bada as anything but stunning but the many anti fan comments will attest to her not being Korea’s idea of sexy. Whatever it may be we know one thing about Bada, and that is that she can sing her ass off! Sexy or not she is an incredibly talented vocalist that with her vocals can give a big middle finger to any anti’s out there!
Maggie Q
Some might question her existence on this list but unfortunately yes, model and actress Maggie Q is often criticized. She’s mocked by antis for her long face and thin frame but flaws can still be beautiful and she sets the bar for unique beauty. Maggie has been in the business for over 10 years now and has graced the covers of countless magazines. She has been a successful actress in both Chinese and American cinema with her newest project starring in the CW drama series as the sexy vixen and femme fatale Nikita. Long face or small with such success she’s obviously seen as a sex symbol by someone!
Seo In Young
Now I absolutely love Seo In Young and I think she is pure beauty and sure sure she has had more surgeries done to her nose then McDonalds number of served customers but even so she is still constantly judged for her imperfections and that is truly unfortunate, because she is a brilliant singer. Seo In Young, the sexual member of Jewelry and feisty diva on We Got Married has been criticized for years and ridiculed when she decided to rock a mushroom like hair style. Ok so she may have been slightly odd during the mushroom days but her singing abilities pretty much overpowers that mushroom. She had a successful run as a member of Jewelry that had promotions in Korea and Japan and is now pursuing a solo career as Seo In Young without Jewelry. A victorious shoe loving diva, In Young is beautiful mushroom or not!
