Green Green TV
Genre: Comedy
Type: Series
From the opening theme, it is clear that Green Green TV wasn't meant to be taken seriously. The plot consists of the typical high school romance; several girls are going after one boy, while other boys are chasing after these few girls. It almost attempts to be a love triangle, but fails miserably since the love triangle is never really allowed to develop. The story is also very perverted at some times that it was hard to watch. While Green Green TV has its funny moments, most of the time the series focuses on slapstick humor that is neither funny nor amusing.
The problems begin with the characters. Midori and Yusuke were created well and actually showed depth. The three main male characters aside from Yusuke seem to have been just thrown in for the comedic relief. They play very little part in the actual storyline, and their appearances both annoy and detract from the main plot. Yusuke's best friends are so unrealistically perverted that the series started to become quite troubling to watch. The other female characters were bearable to watch, but the only one other than Midori that got enough screen time was Futaba. The audience experiences periods of emotional bonding with other female characters, but this time is usually so brief that the characters seem out of place.
Futaba and Midori both fall in love in Yusuke, and one other girl also experiences a moment of love here and there. It would have been better if more girls were chasing after Yusuke, as the drama between the girls was simply not high enough. The perverted trio of boys that are Yusuke?s friends also experience some drama, but this is mainly from trying to sneak into girl?s dormitories or bathhouses. It would be nice if they didn?t make the perverted trio so perverted, as they truly can get on your nerves. The three characters also show no depth in their personalities either.
The anime does not take itself seriously which is why the ending does not work well. The ending was quite sad, and this did not really fit in with the light-hearted feel that you get while watching. The whole time the suspense was building up and one stupid slip-up really turns the anime in a different direction. There was potential for this anime to be good, but each plot device that should've been used was not shown.
The characters in this anime were all drawn appropriately. The women all looked very good and shapely. The guys are well designed in the sense that they were realistic, but they were purposely drawn unattractive to stereotype the boys as ugly perverts. The anime does play up to young boys' desires by adding bouncing breasts and plenty of mudity. Although I've got nothing against some bouncing breasts, when it's overdone it just makes this anime feel unrealistic. Still, I felt that the animation was topnotch and that the artists who drew each character were very good.
The voice acting was decent, but I felt that some characters had annoying voices. However, the voices were appropriate for the character. Midori's high spirited personality came with a high, squeaky, and playful voice. Yusuke's voice sounded very mature and gentle, and the voices of the three friends of Yusuke were very perverted. The opening theme picked up on the light-hearted feel of this anime, and the ending theme was similar as well. I didn't find the tunes to be particularly catchy, but they were very suitable for this anime.
If you are looking for an anime that will engage you in a mind-blowing plot, then look far away from Green Green TV. This anime tries too hard to be funny, but only succeeds in making the audience disgusted in scenes (some are: a monkey rapes a girl, a guy gets sodomized by a bear, and three men have an orgy). The anime had potential, but it falls short of good entertainment.
